MET GALA 2022: Luxury & Opulence Took Over For This Year’s Gilded Glamour Theme – Revisit The BEST Shut-Ish-Down Moments

The category was Gilded Glamour! Several celebs totally understood the assignment while serving up luxury and opulence with their creative takes on this year’s theme. Others, not so much. Revisit all the looks inside…

It’s the Oscars of fashion! That’s right. The biggest night in fashion went down last night at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and several of your faves were attendance putting their best fashion foot forward.

This year’s theme: Gilded Glamour! The Met Gala’s dress code is white tie – think formal floor-length ballgowns and tailcoats for men. Attendees were asked to embody the grandeur of “Gilded Age New York." That era – between 1870 & 1900 – was all about the DRAMA – ruffles, corsets, feathers, bustles, gloves, hats, and high necklines. Luxury and opulence is what the wealthy embodied with extravagant garments during the era.

Cardi B nailed the theme:

The Grammy winning raptress STUNNED in a gold chained Atelier Versace gown that slayed the “Gilded Glamour” theme while staying true to designer Donatella Versace’s aesthetic.

It took a kilometer of gold chains and jewelry to finish Cardi’s dress that looked heavy to walk in.

"This is what I wanted to give," the “UP” raptress – who welcomed her son Wave last September – said on the carpet. “I wanted to give woman and Donatella [Versace] brings that woman. No lipo surgery could bring this body that my son gave me …. It’s giving, it’s giving, it’s giving."

WE. WERE. GAGGING when Normani hit the carpet!

The singer made a grand entrance in a black velvet cascading bubble gown by Christian Siriano that took 40 yards of black silk velvet to make. It was originally made in red and then changed to black four days ago.

UGH. We can hardly stand it.

Surprise! Nicki Minaj made an appearance in a ruffled black leather Burberry ensemble topped with a black leather baseball cap. Not really giving "Gilded Glamour" to us.

As she made her way up the stairs, she stopped to pop off on someone who supposedly "leaked" she was going to be there. Some fans believe she was serious while other think she was just joking:

Lizzo clearly understood the assignment because she came with the embroidered drama like no other!

Styled by Jason Rembert, the "Juice" singer made her way down the carpet in a hand-embroidered gold and black coat (that took 22,000 hours to make) and black gown by Thom Browne. The entertainer’s gold choker necklace was made by Lorraine West. As for her best accessory: her flute!

The corset. The gloves. The hair.

Have Mercy! Chloe Bailey never misses when it comes to red carpet fashion.

For last night’s Met Gala (sans her sister Halle Bailey), the "Treat Me" singer showed off her curves in a glittery gold structured strapless Area dress. She leveled up her look with two gold wings as a choker and reflective gold pumps.

Another one of our fave looks from the night: Tessa Thompson.

The CREED star sashayed down the carpet in a Barbie pink Carolina Gerrera gown that featured a corset and tiered ruffles (styled by Wayman + Miach) that created a princess moment as she made her way up the stairs.

Gabrielle Union WOWED in a Versace gown that paid tribute to trailblazing actress Diahann Carroll, who died in 2019 at 84.

"So this is inspired by Diahann Carroll, a symbol of opulence and if you will, a gilded glamor."

"This is from Versace, they’ve been working on these looks for many, many, many months and from sketch to the execution is dead-on," she told VOGUE on the carpet. "I kind of get a little emotional when you talk about everything that goes into the making of this dress and what inspired it."

Her husband Dwayne Wade – who went shirtless – also rocked Versace:

Model Naomi Campbell’s look gave rich b**** vibes. She pulled up on the carpet in a black and silver floor length bejeweled Burberry gown, accessorized with a 18-karat yellow gold Jacob & Co. choker that is valued at $6.6 million. The extravagant choker took about two years to source and create. Sheesh!

Tennis superstar Venus Williams – in a Chloe suit – hit the Met Gala red carpet alongside actress Amy Schumer and climate justice activists Xiye Bastida and Gabriela Hearst. We’re not sure how/why this happened, but it did. Maybe they’re working on something together.

Cynthia Erivo dazzled in a white lace Louis Vuitton gown with a feathered train.

The British actress explained, “We wanted to find something that felt like it was Gilded Glamour, so we have a layering of different textures and fabrics.”

As she showed off her head scarf, she said, “We’re trying to tie the American lexicon together, and this is inspired by women of Louisiana from the 1800s, who had to cover their hair for necessity… I wanted to tie those things together because those women don’t get the credit they deserve for the fashion.”
