The EMMY nominated actress covers SELF magazine’s October 2021 issue where she gives her fans a little insight into her personal life as she opens up about being a newlywed, whether she wants kids, setting boundaries and more.

As you know, Issa is notoriously private about her personal life. Like, she’s super secret about her love life. We didn’t find out she was married until she announced it on Instagram in July.

“I still try to be private about my personal life, but that was something that I knew was going to be shared, and I just wanted to share it on my own terms,” Issa told the publication.

Now that she’s a married woman and uber happy, are kids in her future?

“I’m extremely happy,” she said about being married. “I like my life, I like this selfishness, and I know that I have a window."

She talked about her hesitancy over having children:

"I’ve always felt that way, that women, Black women especially—unless you’re Viola Davis or Angela Bassett—you have a window when people are going to want to continue to see you and see what you can do. Then there are so many limitations placed upon you, and that does keep me up. I want to do as much as I can while I still can. I know it’s not the proper mentality to think that kids will slow you down, but I do feel that way.”

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Me, my @SELFmagazine and I.

The famed Black creative talked about setting boundaries and how important it is to have them:

For Rae, whose star will surely only continue to rise and who may very well one day reach the level of “super famous” she’s grateful to have avoided so far, boundaries are a good thing—a form of protection rather than punishment. “There’s something really nice to have a piece of me that no one knows about or no one can talk about except for the people that are part of my life,” she says. "Self-care has been having a private piece that’s just for me."

And we love to see it.
